Matt was a law clerk to the Chief Judge of Ramsey County where he saw everything from complex multi-million dollar products liability trials and litigation to conciliation court appeals and housing court trials. Before that, he was a Certified Student Attorney with the Hennepin and Ramsey County Attorney's Offices working in civil commitments, criminal trials, and criminal appeals. Matt graduated from Hamline University School of Law, summa cum lade, where he participated in Law Review, received CALI Awards in Legal Research and Writing I and II, and tutored first year law students in criminal and constitutional law. He enjoys spending time with his young family, playing hockey, hunting, and fishing. Matt is a participant in St. Paul's Adopt-a-Drain program and a member of the Ruffed Grouse Society. He volunteered with Mitchell Hamline School of Law's Mobile Law Network, supervising law students who bring legal help to under-served communities in St. Paul. Matt is admitted to practice before the Minnesota Supreme Court and the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota.
After four years as Partner at Janecek and Wright, Steve left practice to work in management for West Publishing, now Thomson Reuters. Steve's work at West ultimately led to the creation of the dominant search engine in the legal field. Steve moved on to Director positions in Product Development and Business Development, working directly
After four years as Partner at Janecek and Wright, Steve left practice to work in management for West Publishing, now Thomson Reuters. Steve's work at West ultimately led to the creation of the dominant search engine in the legal field. Steve moved on to Director positions in Product Development and Business Development, working directly with small business owners. He then took on the role of Senior Director for Expert Witness Services. Steve is the named inventor of several Thomson Reuters patents on software for integrating legal documents into law firm workflow. (Patent Application Numbers US 8185560, WO 2010039549A9, and US 20120089640A1). Steve left Thomson Reuters and founded a small business consulting firm, Varmland LLC. Helping small businesses flourish is his passion. Steve's hobbies include spending time with his ever-growing family, reading, and anything related to sports. Steve is semi-retired and will continue with the firm as an independent contractor through Varmland Law PLLC.
